My attraction to chrome decor started with a chair. To be specific, it was Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s Cantilever chair. Most people flock to the Barcelona chair, but the corset back on the MR chair makes me drool puddles. Although there are many reasons why the Bauhaus era is so iconic, I get weak in the knees just thinking about the curves of those tubular steel seat frames. Marcel Breuer’s Cesca chair is another hot seat that’s never going out of style, along with the Wassily chair. In the off chance that you disagree, the fashion stylist Mel Reneé Leamon will gladly back me up here!
Lately, it’s been hard not to notice chrome decor popping up everywhere from dining tables set with Christofle silverware and aluminum surfaces at the Gohar World Holiday Shop to the brushed aluminum bookshelf at Climax Books in New York City. As I predicted, chrome was huge in 2024. Truth be told, I’ve had an eye for silver long before chairs ever occupied my thoughts—all credit to my mother for spending the majority of her quality time with me hosting tea parties with antique silver. On the journey to womanhood, most girls will experience that pivotal coming-of-age moment when they watch Breakfast at Tiffany’s for the first time and never look at jewelry the same way—Audrey Hepburn makes a strong case for sterling silver and clearly influenced me when I was a teenager because all I seemed to fantasize about was being dripped out in Tiffany & Co. pieces.
Eventually, I upgraded my fixation to furniture and home goods such as the Tiffany Tea (an exclusive collaboration with Bellocq), along with shelving units by FRAMA and USM Haller. I fantasize about designing a contemporary kitchen with a stainless steel range hood and Reform cabinetry. Most importantly, chrome has served as the perfect pairing with burl wood, as both a preventative for projecting a sterile energy and looking a little too much like a log cabin in the woods. The ultimate goal is to have a cabinet filled to the brim with a curated collection of silver like @outofuseberlin.
I’m outspokenly pro mixing metals, but the sparkle of chrome just hits different. It’s the metallic crossover where industrial minimalist meets material girl maximalist. And with the Middle Ages modern movement bringing chain mail back in all its glory, there has never been a better time to experiment if you’re feeling chrome curious. I could go on and on about this trend because I’m a Taurus, so without further ado, feast your eyes on my special selects in the chrome decor category below. (For an even more pleasurable reading experience, please listen to Charli XCX’s 2019 banger “Silver Cross” while doomscrolling.)
